Product:
The U.S. government issued gold coins for circulation from 1795 to 1933 in denominations of $1 through $20. By the early 20th century, the designs of U.S. gold coins were long overdue for a makeover. The Liberty Head design had been employed for nearly 70 years with little modification. President Theodore Roosevelt took personal interest in redesigning the nation’s gold coins and commissioned famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create new patterns for the $10 and $20 gold pieces, which debuted in 1907 with much fanfare. The $5 and $2.5 denominations were designed by sculptor Bela Lynn Pratt using a sunken relief design and followed the next year. Gold coin production continued sporadically though 1933, until President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 6102 on April 5th, “forbidding the hoarding of gold coin, gold bullion, and gold certificates within the continental United States.” The order caused all gold coin production to cease, marking the end of a 140-year history in the United States. Today, the Indian Head and Saint Gaudens designs remain national relics of the “Golden Age” of American numismatics. Offered here is an exceptional 5-coin set of $1, $2.50, $5, $10, and $20 gold pieces that have been hand-selected by professional numismatists after screening thousands of coins for quality and eye-appeal. Each coin is housed in an airtight capsule and the set is presented in a luxurious, plush-lined wood box with embossed metallic gold lettering, piano-black finish, and certificate of authenticity. The coins are unconditionally guaranteed to be genuine, dated between 1856 and 1932, and will match the quality of the ones shown.
